De Matthäus Passion van Reinbert de Leeuw

Pianist/director/composer Reinbert de Leeuw has always been committed to contemporary music. To his own surprise, he scored a big hit with his remarkably tranquil interpretation of Eric Satie's piano work, but he also managed to bring the work of the recently deceased Russian composer Sofia Gubaidoelina to the attention of a large audience.

He was already well into his 70s when he decided to throw himself into one of the greatest musical monuments in history: Johann Sebastian Bach's St Matthew Passion. He did it with abandonment, drive and boundless commitment. In 2016, Cherry Duyns made a film about that love for Bach's music: De Matthäus missie van Reinbert de Leeuw (Reinbert de Leeuw's Matthäus Mission).

What all that effort led to can be seen in this film - an integral recording of the St Matthew Passion, performed in the Nieuwe Kerk by several famous soloists, the Holland Baroque orchestra, the Nederlands Kamerkoor and the Roder Boys' Choir. De Leeuw conducts, Duyns recorded.
