Flophouse America
Also in the United States, there are countless people who cannot find decent housing, Often there is nothing left for these people but to live in cheap, run-down and dirty hotels known as flophouses. 12-year-old Mikal was born and raised in one such hotel, where he lives with his parents who struggle with addiction. Mikal is a smart kid, but his parents cannot offer him the stability he needs to thrive. His biggest wish: for his mother to stop drinking.
Norwegian photographer Monica Strømdahl has been documenting the fate of those for whom flophouse poverty is the daily reality for years. Four years back, she met Mikal and through his story, she wants to bring to light this crisis that is invisible to many. The result is this documentary, her first film - an intimate portrait of people living on the fringes of society.
