Raw
Justine begins the first year of veterinary medicine studies, the same course that her older sister Alexia attends and that her parents also attended. Naturally, she has to be hazed and during one of those rituals, she is forced to eat raw rabbit kidneys. Justine, a vegetarian all her life, is disgusted by the idea but does it anyway, with very surprising consequences, because since that day she constantly craves meat. When Alexia loses her finger in an accident, even that body part turns out to taste very good to Justine. Her hunger for human flesh is now really whetted. Indeed, when she accidentally bites herself, she experiences a violent orgasm.
A film in which cannibalism plays such a prominent role naturally evokes very different reactions. But Raw, French director Julia Ducournau's first feature film, was almost universally well received. Rolling Stone's reviewer considered this mix of body horror and coming-of-age ‘a contender for the title of best horror film of the decade’.

Rialto staff member Maryam El Achiri: 'What does cannibalism mean? In this film, it should be seen mainly as an allegory for unbridled sexual hunger.'
