Hot Milk
British anthropology student Sofia has settled down with her mother Rose in the Spanish seaside town of Almería. Rose is confined to a wheelchair because of unexplained pains in her leg, but perhaps medical specialist Dr Gómez can bring relief and healing. Because of all her complaints, Rose is in a bad mood, something Sofia can barely tolerate. To escape from all the grumpiness for a while, she goes to work with her laptop in a beach bar and there she meets free-spirited traveller Ingrid. The two are strongly attracted to each other and start a relationship. Of course, this has implications for how Sofia comes to feel towards her mother.
In 2016, South African writer Deborah Levy published the novel Hot Milk, in which she examines the dynamics of complex family relationships and how people can extricate themselves from them. Rebecca Lenkiewicz, best known as a screenwriter, filmed it starring Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw and Vicky Krieps.
