Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted
He came from a musical family and was hugely musical himself: Jerry Williams Jr., born in 1942 in Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1954, when he was 12, he recorded his first record: HTD Blues. Since then, his well of creativity has never dried up. In the 50s and 60s, he was known as Little Jerry (Williams), in 1970 he reinvented himself and continued as Swamp Dogg, the man who released satirical, unconventional and eccentric records to give an innovative impetus to genres such as soul, bluegrass, hip-hop and country.
These days, Swamp Dogg lives in the San Fernando Valley, where he has created a creative sanctuary with fellow musicians Moogstar and Guitar Shorty. Apart from the fact that the pool just won't get painted, Swamp Dogg is not sitting still: 2024 saw the release of his new album Blackgrass: From West Virginia to 125th St. This fascinating portrait won the Grand Jury Prize for best music documentary at the Nashville Film Festival, among other awards.
