Matt and Mara
For Mara, a literature professor at the University of Toronto, daily life is often a struggle. There is a new baby, who requires a lot of attention, while her husband Samir often seems absent. One day, she meets an old acquaintance: Matt, a slightly neurotic writer, her best friend from her college days. It turns out they still get along very well and spend a lot of time together - they have intense conversations, they repel each other, they attract each other. Big question: where is the line between a friendship and a love affair? And is that boundary crossed?
In his fourth feature film, Canadian director Kazik Radwanski paints a nuanced picture of a friendship that is very close to an affair. He does so by filming his protagonists Deragh Campbell and Matt Johnson very closely with his handheld camera. But also by leaving Campbell and Johnson free to improvise as they see fit.
