So Long, My Son

1980s China experienced immense changes. After discarding the ideas of the Cultural Revolution, the switch to a market economy was made. In an attempt to somewhat curb the growing population, a one-child policy was introduced. Against this background, director Wang Xiaoshuai places this epic tale of a tragic accident's lasting impact on the lives of two families. The story spans a period of more than 30 years, which Wang presents non-chronologically.

Yaoyun and his wife Liyun are friends with the couple Yingming and Haiyan, both their sons Xingxing and Haohao are friends as well. One day, the two boys go for a swim in a reservoir, with a fatal outcome: Xingxing drowns. What was Haohao's role in the accident? Years later, Yaoyun and Liyun have moved to the countryside somewhere in southern China, where they live with their son: Xingxing. Even though they and the other couple have grown apart, their lives remain connected.
