Ema

Everyone thinking they have seen more or less everything as far as films are concerned, has clearly not reckoned with Ema, the new film by Chilean director Pablo Larraín (NO, Jackie). Calling the film an audio-visual spectacle is not enough by far: the camera work, pyrotechnic effects, dance and music make this film a poignant, overwhelming experience.

Everything goes wrong in the life of young dancer Ema, an amazing role played by Mariana di Girolama, when she and her husband, choreographer Gastón, decide to return their seven-year-old adopted son Polo to the orphanage – the boy is unmanageable. The decision puts a heavy strain on their relationship. Ema soon decides to get Polo back. Helped by her dance friends and armed with a homemade flamethrower, she sets off. Nothing can hold her back... With an exhilarating, pulsating reggaeton soundtrack by musician/artist Nicolas Jaar.

After the screening, Anna Marah Jansen, founder of Sekswijzer, will talk with writer/midwife/philosopher Rodante van der Waal, author of Baas in eigen buik, among other works. Their conversation will focus on the Myth of Motherhood. Additionally, Nene Moné, a Chilean artist and DJ, will provide extra context through a short video about the music in the film.

The talk will be in Dutch.
