Angel's Egg

A young, nameless girl walks through a silent, deserted world, full of strange technology and a mechanical sun. She carries a large egg with her, which she believes will eventually hatch into an angel. Then she meets a boy, also nameless, who carries a cross-shaped weapon. She is frightened and flees, forgetting the egg in her haste. But the boy catches up with her to return the egg, thereby gaining her trust. The boy is searching for the bird from his dreams, but he also desperately wants to know what is inside the egg. Together they wander through a world that remains unfathomable.

This experimental, post-apocalyptic anime contains little dialogue, but all the more symbolism and mythical and biblical references. Many found it too complicated at the time and ignored the film, but now, forty years later, it has achieved cult status. Originally released on video, it is now being shown in cinemas for the first time.
