If I Die, It’ll Be of Joy

In the eyes of many, (queer) elderly people have already lived their lives. Sitting quietly behind their geraniums, they must wait for the inevitable end of life. The fact that elderly people can still be full of desires, including in the area of sexuality, is something that most people do not see. Director Alexis Taillant offers a refreshing perspective on this invisibility and critically examines age-related cultural attitudes towards LGBTQ+ elderly people.

He does so through the experiences of 81-year-old Micheline, 70-year-old Francis and 68-year-old Yves. Micheline thinks it is nonsense that someone her age should no longer know passion, because she herself is still bursting with desire. Francis is committed to the emancipation of queer older people with his action group Grey Pride, while lonely Yves longs for connection in a world that does not see him. Taillant shows that old age can indeed be a period of joy, love and pleasure.
