Claire's Camera

Can a picture change reality? This question forms the basis for this light and philosophical comedy by South Korean director Hong Sangsoo, who received a very positive reception at the 2017 Cannes film festival.

"If I take a picture of you, you will no longer be the same person," claims music teacher Claire (Isabelle Huppert), who constantly photographs people with her polaroid. She has just arrived in Cannes, southern France, where the famous film festival is going on at that time. On the beach she meets the young Manhee, who was employed by director So Wansoo; his new film will have its world premiere during the festival. However, Manhee has just been fired by So's sales agent Nam Yanghye. She would be unfair, Nam claims, but the real reason is her displeasure at the fact that Manhee shared the bed with So. Claire also meets So and Nam, and she also photographs them. And indeed, then something has changed.
