Scarlet

Medieval princess Scarlet vows to take revenge on her treacherous uncle Claudius, the man who murdered her father, King Amleth. One day, she puts poison in his drink, but Claudius switches the cups, and Scarlet poisons herself. The fallen princess awakens in another world, a kind of purgatory between the heavenly Infinite Lands and the bleak prospect of Nothingness. A magical old woman tells her that Claudius is also in this transitional world, so perhaps Scarlet can still take her revenge. One day, she sees a ray of light falling from the sky. It is the peace-loving Hijiri, a deceased paramedic from the future. At first, she cannot get along with this pacifist, but that will change.

For his previous film, Belle, Japanese anime director Mamoru Hosoda drew inspiration from Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve's 1740 novel La Belle et la BĂȘte. For Scarlet, he goes back even further, to William Shakespeare's famous 1623 play Hamlet.
