Sound of Falling

A few years ago, director Mascha Schilinski spent a summer on a farm in Altmark, Germany, where she found some very old photographs of three women. How did those women live, what happened to them? Those questions inspired her to write the screenplay for Sound of Falling, a non-linear story about four girls spanning more than a century. The four do not know each other, but what they have in common is that they all lived on the same farm in Altmark and are confronted with the same secrets and traumas.

In the 1910s, little Alma lives with her parents and sisters on a farm in the Altmark countryside. She has a carefree childhood, even though death is ever-present. Thirty years later, teenager Erika lives with her parents and sister Irm on the same farm. Everyday life is dominated by the war. In the 1980s, Angelika, Irm's teenage daughter, lives on the farm. She likes to provoke and push boundaries. Another forty years later, 12-year-old Lenka, Angelika's granddaughter, lives on the farm. She is strongly influenced by an older girl from the village.
