Into the Wild
In April 1992, Chris McCandless arrives in remote Healy, somewhere in rugged Alaska. Although he is ill-prepared, he is happy to now be able to live in total isolation from civilisation, surrounded by beautiful nature. He finds shelter in an abandoned city bus, which he names The Magic Bus. Two years earlier, he was a highly successful student, but after a disillusioning discovery, he renounces modern society; he destroys his credit cards and identity documents, donates all his savings to charity and, under the name “Alexander Supertramp”, begins a long journey across America, hitchhiking, which eventually takes him to Alaska. Once there, life in the wilderness proves to be far from easy.
In 1996, author Jon Krakauer published Into the Wild, a biographical story about Chris McCandless, a man who chose a nomadic existence. Director Sean Penn adapted it into a film starring Emile Hirsch in the lead role.
