A Useful Ghost
Following her husband’s death, Suman is now the owner of a factory that manufactures household appliances. But there is a problem: some of these appliances appear to be possessed by the spirits of deceased people. For instance, she is plagued by the spirit of Tok, a former employee who has since passed away and who blames his death on the working conditions. But there is another spirit: that of Nat, the wife of Suman’s son March. He is overjoyed to see her again, even though she has now tucked herself away in a vacuum cleaner. His family aren’t too pleased with this, but Nat makes herself very useful by chasing the spirits out of the factory. It doesn’t stop there, much to March’s displeasure.
In this feature film debut, which he co-wrote and which blends comedy and drama, director Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke pays tribute to the art of imaginative storytelling. The film, which is reminiscent of the work of Yorgos Lanthimos, was awarded the Grand Prix at Cannes.
