Dead Man
Accountant William Blake from Cleveland, Ohio, is traveling to the frontier town of Machine, somewhere in the West, in the late 19th century, because he has found a new job there. Once he arrives, he discovers that the job has already been given to someone else. Without a job or money, he meets former prostitute Thel Russell, who takes him in. He gets caught up in a violent incident when her ex-boyfriend shows up. The ex-boyfriend and Thel don’t survive; he is wounded. While fleeing, he meets a Native American, a spiritual man who calls himself Nobody. Nobody, realizing that Blake does not have long to live due to his injury, sees in him the reincarnation of the English poet William Blake.
Jim Jarmusch described this film, which he wrote himself and shot in black and white, as a “psychedelic western.” Alongside Johnny Depp, Billie Bob Thornton, Iggy Pop, John Hurt, and Robert Mitchum also make appearances. The music is by Neil Young.
