The Fisherman
As he grows older, Ghanaian Atta Oko dreams of owning his own boat so he can become the boat captain of his fishing village. After years of hard work, the moment finally arrives when the torch must be passed on. But Oko is passed over; the son of the departing captain is given the position. Disappointed and angry, Oko unexpectedly sees the tide turn when he meets a talking fish; that fish must have a message for him. With three young friends, Oko travels to the capital, Accra, hoping to find the money for a new boat there. It turns into an adventurous undertaking.
With this magical-realist comedy, her first feature film, director Zoey Martinson brings the richness of Ghanaian culture to life, as Atta Oko must navigate between tradition and modernity amidst all the chaos. It earned her the UNESCO Fellini Medal at the Venice Film Festival in 2024.
