Following the preview screening, there will be a Q&A session with director Claire Pijman, moderated by Emy Liedelmeijer (Indisch Herinneringscentrum).
Batik, Beats & Bumbu
Batik is a traditional Indonesian textile technique, ‘beats’ refers to music and ‘bumbu’ to spicy seasonings… In this documentary, filmmaker Claire Pijman uses these three elements as a starting point for a story about identity. She follows young creators with Indonesian roots who demonstrate how what you learn from your family influences what you create, whether on stage, in the kitchen or in the studio.
Pijman follows the third generation, including Myrthe Groot and Romee Mulder from fashion studio Guave, DJ, photographer and label boss Sekan, culinary artist Vanja van der Leeden and the band Nusantara Beat. In collaborations with artists from Indonesia, they work on projects in fashion, music and food, thereby also bringing contemporary Indonesia into focus. In this way, the film shows how their work builds on the past and gives it its own contemporary form.
