Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love

"I'm just a little behind you, close enough to take your hand," Canadian singer Leonard Cohen wrote in 2016 to Norwegian Marianne Ihlen, his one-time muse and lover. It was his last letter to her. Ilhen died in July that year, Cohen died three months later. They had met 56 years earlier, on the idyllic Greek island of Hydra, in those days a place where free spirits gathered to explore new, open forms of relationships. As did Marianne and Leonard, the island providing the ideal setting for their burgeoning love.

This documentary by the British Nick Broomfield, who once also was in a short relationship with Ihlen, follows the love story of the pair from the early days to the break-up, using never before seen footage. It is a story of highs and lows, a story about feelings that never dwindle. "I've never forgotten your love and your beauty," Cohen wrote.
