Drama Girl
People base their identities on the stories they tell about their own lives. Director Vincent Boy Kars, who explicitly defines himself as a millennial, took this psychological theory as the starting point for his remarkable film experiment: deconstructing the drama genre, exploring the relationship between fiction, documentary, reality and "everything in between".
At the film's centre is a young woman: 26-year-old dancer and artist Leyla de Muynck. Kars offers her an opportunity to come to terms with her past by letting her re-enact a number of past difficult and defining events. She doesn't do this alone, professional actors play significant people in her life: Pierre Bokma as her father, Elsie de Brauw as her mother, and Jonas Smulders as the boyfriend. Thus she and Kars try to discover how people create such a life story, but also how this story can be disturbed by traumatic events.
