The Kingmaker, Imelda Marcos

Everyone knew that former first lady Imelda Marcos (Manila, 1929), the wife of Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos, had an expensive taste and lived an ostentatious lifestyle. But how expensive and how ostentatious only became clear after the couple were ousted by a popular uprising in 1986 and had to flee abroad. In Imelda's abandoned rooms in the presidential palace, expensive dresses and jewellery were found as well as thousands of pairs of shoes.

After Ferdinand's death, she was allowed to return to her homeland. Not much has changed: she is still spending her days flaunting her wealth and sees herself as the "mother" of the country. Filmmaker Lauren Greenfield tries to find out where all her money is coming from, thus not only portraying Imelda, but also the Philippines, a country where corruption is rampant, where money and power are mutually reinforcing entities.
