Été 85
French director François Ozon has explored many genres in his films, but be it a mysterious drama like Sous le sable, a Hollywood crime musical like 8 Femmes, or a thriller like Dans la maison, his signature is always recognizable: (gay) love often as the leading theme and generally something dark brewing underneath. This also goes for his newest film. Été 85, based on Aidan Chamber's 1982 novel Dance on my grave, initially reminds of the summer, idyllic love drama Call Me By Your Name, until the main character's story of first love takes quite a different turn.
Dieppe, summer of '85: 16-year-old Alexis has taken a sailboat out to sea when a storm bursts and he capsizes. Fortunately, he is rescued by David, two years his senior. Love sparks between the two boys. With 80s music by Rod Stewart, The Cure, and more.
