Warm, endearing family drama by Kore-eda Hirokazu, who has proven to have a keen eye for the complexity of family relationships with films such as Nobody Knows, Like Father, Like Son and Our Little Sister. His new film, Shoplifters, is viewed by many as the best he has made so far — also by the jury of the past Cannes film festival, where it won the Golden Palm.
The Shibatas live in poverty. Father Shibata and his wife both work to pay for everyone's basic needs, but can't make ends meet without some additional regular petty thievery. One night after Osamu and his son Shota have been out shoplifting they discover a small, shivering girl alone in the streets. They take her home with them. When mother Nobuyo discovers that the child is an abuse victim, they decide to keep her instead of trying to find her parents. But of course there are people searching for the child. This has unexpected consequences.
