Agosto

When the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1991, that had major consequences for Cuba. Not only did their main political ally disappear, but economic support also came to an end. Cuba entered a deep economic crisis, the time when tens of thousands of Cubans dared to cross over to the US on ramshackle rafts in order to escape poverty - a 'Special Period in Times of Peace'. Against this background, director Armando Capó tells this coming-of-age story, his directorial debut.

Teenager Carlos lives in the Cuban coastal town of Gibara with parents and grandmother who has dementia. Summer is in full swing and he and his friends Mandy and friend Elena are mostly exploring all kinds of new and exciting feelings that they're now aware of. But the crisis is also visible everywhere, every day he sees countless people on their way to the northern coast: refugees. Carlos cannot imagine that all this will also affect him personally. But it will...
