Robert (Richard Jenkins) and Theresa Dyne (Debra Winger) have spent 26 years teaching their daughter, Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood) the ins and outs of the family business: swindling, scamming, and stealing. Late on rent and needing to make some money fast, Old Dolio hatches a con involving luxury luggage allegedly lost by the airline. It works; only it will take several weeks for their "loss" to be actually compensated. Then they meet Melanie (Gina Rodriguez), another seasoned con artist, who teams up with the Dynes. She suggests a cunning plan enthusiastically embraced by Robert and Theresa, less so by Old Dolio, who is wary of Melanie. Is it jealousy?
Director Miranda July, best known for Me and You and Everyone We Know, has sometimes been accused of being too fond of creating weird, goofy, and quirky characters and situations. Luckily she has ignored all that, as evidenced by this original self-written film, a comedy-drama filled with very weird characters and situations.
