Nomadland
The drama Nomadland had its world premiere on 11 September 2020 at the Venice Film Festival as well as the Toronto International Film Festival, garnering top awards at both events: it won the Golden Lion in Venice, and the People's Choice Award in Toronto.
Fern, a somewhat grumpy woman in her sixties, brilliantly portrayed by Frances McDormand, lives and works in a small town in Nevada. When all local companies are forced to close down due to the outbreak of the 2008 financial crisis she loses her job. Unable to live on her pension alone, Fern decides to hit the road in her white van, pursuing the existence of a nomad and looking for odd jobs for money. On her travels she encounters people in the same situation.
Chinese-American director Chloé Zhao's third film is not only an inspiring road movie, but also a character study of a proud and adventurous woman who is not homeless, just houseless, as she herself puts it. An important distinction.
