Radiograph of a Family

Life can be strange indeed: director Firouzeh Khosrovani's mother married a photo of her father – literally. At the time of the wedding in the 1960s, mother Tayi was in Teheran, while father Hossein was studying radiology in Switzerland. Soon after, Tayi left for Switzerland to live with a man who was actually a stranger to her. The differences between the devout Muslim Tayi and the secular Hossein turned out to be huge and were to define their daily life permanently. After the birth of Firouzeh, the family returned to Iran, where these differences became even more pronounced following the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

Using archival footage, letters, old photographs and interviews, Khosrovani paints an intimate portrait of the family she grew up in. A portrait that symbolizes the current state of affairs in Iran, a country where the contrast between secular and religious seem irreconcilable. For Khosrovani, this fifth film is her life's work.
