The Gold Rush

The Little Tramp seeks his fortune in the Klondike gold mines. When a blizzard strikes, he has to find shelter and stumbles into an abandoned cabin where the wanted criminal Black Larson and good-natured Big Jim McKay also happen to ride out the storm. The men get hungry and are forced to eat whatever there is. While Chaplin chews on his shoe, one of the others is considering murder to sate his hunger.

In this strange world – where shoelaces look like spaghetti and ballet shoes become sandwiches – alchemist Chaplin turns gold into poetry. The Gold Rush was first released in 1925. After its re-release in 1942, the film was nominated for two Oscars in 1943.
