The Card Counter
After serving time in prison for harrowing crimes in Iraq, ex-military William Tell reinvents himself as a professional gambler. During a presentation by Major John Gordo (Willem Dafoe), William is approached by Cirk (Tye Sheridan), a troubled young man. William takes him on a tour of various casinos to keep him on the straight and narrow. This task, however, becomes increasingly difficult as William's past casts an ever-stronger shadow over his life.
In The Card Counter, director and screenwriter Paul Schrader once again draws the portrait of a loner with a guilty conscience. From his first scripts as Taxi Driver to his previous film First Reformed: loners in search of catharsis is the thread that runs through Schrader's oeuvre. A stylish film noir starring an unforgettable Oscar Isaac.
