Maria and her husband Ingvar live together on a beautiful but very remote farm somewhere in the north of Iceland. They have no children, but they do have a herd of sheep and a sheepdog. Their life together is as bare and cold as the landscape in which it takes place. They hardly talk, there is only the work on the farm. Everything changes when one day, in the sheepfold, they find a gift from Mother Nature that is as unexpected as it is mysterious. But everything has a price.
Director Valdimar Jóhannsson spent a lot of time on his grandparents' sheep farm in his youth. In this film, his first feature, he and scriptwriter Sjón have combined these memories and experience into a highly original mix of folk tale, drama and thriller. Awarded at the last film festival in Cannes, among other places. With Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Gudnason.
