The Traveler

12-year-old Qassem lives with his parents in a poor neighbourhood in the small town of Malayer. His father never has time for him, all his mother does is scold him. He isn't interested in school, but is very much into football. He is determined to attend an important match of his favourite club in the capital Tehran. The thing is: Tehran is far away and he has no money for the bus, let alone money for a ticket to actually enter the stadium. But Qassem is resourceful: with lying, cheating and stealing, he manages to scrape together the necessary money. Late at night he sneaks out of the house to go to the station, where a bus will take him to Tehran.

In his first feature-length film, director Abbas Kiarostami explores the origins of moral and immoral behaviour and its relation to childhood and social conventions. A neo-realistic gem, which Kiarostami wrote with screenwriter Hassan Rafi'i.
