Un Monde - Expat Cinema
Childhood is supposed to be a time of carelessness and fun. Sadly, for many children this is not true however. The school playground is a place where it is most obvious, with children marking out their territory, often at the expense of their peers. Belgian director Laura Wandel wants to show these dynamics in her self-written feature debut, telling the story from the perspective of a child.
For Nora, the first day at primary school is quite daunting and she clings to her older brother Abel, who is at the same school. While she is making her first friends, she notices that Abel is being excluded and bullied by his classmates. Wanting to help, she tells their father. Abel asks her to keep quiet though. Nora ends up faced with a devastating choice.
