Mrs. F.
'Ladies and gentlemen, do you want change? Join us!' This call comes from Nigerian theatre director Ifeoma Fafunwa, also known as Mrs F. On streets and stages across Nigeria, she performs her play HEAR WORD, which she based on true stories of Nigerian women, stories of women's oppression and sexual violence. The leading parts are played by local women and girls who are brave enough to stand up and speak out.
But then she decided to stage the production in Makoko, the floating slum on the outskirts of Lagos. Virtually all women and girls there have experienced (sexual) violence. The men are at best disinterested, at worst suspicious and hostile. Can Ifeoma get through to the girls? And will she succeed in breaking through the culture of silence that is so dominant in Nigeria? Powerful and inspiring portrait of a driven woman.
This screening is made possible by Hivos. Hivos fights together with courageous people for justice and inclusive societies. With smart and daring projects around the world, they resist discrimination and abuse of power. Read more about Hivos here.
