Summer with Monika
19-year-old Harry meets Monika, an adventurous 17-year-old, in a café. They hit it off and they soon strike up a rambunctious romance. Their relationship gains momentum when Monika seeks help from Harry after running away from home and her alcoholic father. When Harry gets into an argument with his boss, he quits his job. Harry and Monika take a boat to an island off the coast and spend an idyllic summer together. But when summer ends they are forced to return home. They have run out of money, also Monika is pregnant. The days of carefree love are long gone.
Bergman's tender but realistic story became a worldwide success, in no small part due to Harriet Andersson's sensual acting, adding an earthy eroticism to the film. In the Netherlands, the film was deemed contrary to public decency, but eventually it was rated for 18 years and older.
