Geographies of Solitude

About 300 km east of Canada's Nova Scotia is Sable Island, a small, crescent-shaped island. It is always windy, home to feral horses, countless birds and huge numbers of seals. This is where Zoe Lucas has lived on her own, for over forty years. All these years she has been unabatedly fascinated by everything that happens on the island. She observes life, from insects to horses, and she collects the waste that washes ashore. She classifies this waste into all sorts of specific categories, creating a collection of beauty as alienating as it is wondrous.

Filmmaker Jacquelyn Mills sought her out to capture her daily life (on 16mm). She captures all the seasons and shows how rich, beautiful and diverse life on the island is, and the role Lucas plays in it. The multi-award-winning result pays tribute to life on earth, but also shows how fragile it is.
