Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy

In 2021, Japanese director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi made the beautiful drama Drive My Car, which recently won the Oscar for best international feature. In between filming, he completed Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, a triptych centred around three women finding their way through life – tales of love, regret and deceit, in which chance plays a crucial role. The film was awarded the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the last Berlinale.

1. Magic (Or Something Less Assuring): Meiko discovers that her best friend Tsugumi has embarked on a romance with Meiko's ex-boyfriend. Although she hasn't seen him in a while, she hasn't forgotten him.
2. Door Wide Open: Nao's younger boyfriend, Sasaki, persuades her to seduce his professor. Sasaki is seeking revenge because the professor has given him a bad grade.
3. Once Again: Maka and Nana haven't seen each other for twenty years and they also miss each other at a high school reunion. Eventually they do bump into each other. But something is amiss.
