Previously Unreleased: The Souvenir: Part II
There are films that do very well at festivals, that are successful abroad, but are never released in the Netherlands. Eye Filmmuseum have brought a few of these films to Dutch cinemas under the title Previously Unreleased. Also in Rialto.
The Souvenir: Part II
Two years prior to this film, the British director Joanna Hogg made The Souvenir, in which film student Julie ends up in a destructive relationship with the slightly older, rather manipulative Anthony. In The Souvenir: Part II, the story continues, although it is not a sequel; these two films can very well be seen separately. Again, the story again is highly autobiographical; Hogg looks back on her own experiences as a film student in this film-over-film. Tilda Swinton, the mother of leading lady Honor Swinton Byrne, also appears again as Julie's mother Rosalind.
Julie became very unhappy with her relationship with Anthony. She decides to turn her experiences into a film, but that is far from easy. First of all, she has to discover what she really wants from life, who she is. Starting a film without any direction does not work. Only when she succeeds in completing this project can she leave the past behind.
