Many tales have been published about Empress Sisi, but one like Marie Kreutzers Corsage we have not yet known. Kreutzers portrays the Austrian empress in a way we have not seen before: as a complex woman who struggles with her loneliness, her anger and her (suppressed) passions. Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Bergman Island) convincingly creeps into the role of Sissi.
On the day of her fortieth birthday, Sisi is cast aside as an "older" woman, against all odds. Bathing in luxury, but also tormented by loneliness, she takes up the fight with the literal and figurative straitjacket that the imperial role demands of her. She diligently tries to find a way out of both her oppressive corset and the walls of the palace that are closing in on her.
