Aftersun
In the 1990s, 30-year-old Scottish father Calum takes his 11-year-old daughter Sophie on a holiday to a Turkish seaside resort. The two have a close and warm bond, and consequently have an idyllic time there full of fun things like sunbathing, swimming and lazing around. Twenty years later, now grown-up Sophie thinks back to that holiday and looks at the old video recordings her father and she made at the time. The more she watches that footage, the more it becomes clear to her that something was going on with her father. But what?
"Every scene comes on like a whisper, each more hushed than the last. These whispers quickly accumulate to make a devastating conversation," wrote an American reviewer about this now critically acclaimed, autobiographical feature debut from Scottish director Charlotte Wells, which is all about looking back, memories and feelings. Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal play the lead roles, Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) was one of the producers.
