Godland

In the late 19th century, young Danish priest Lucas is assigned to travel to Iceland, then a Danish colony. There he has to do two things: build a new church in a remote parish, and photograph the people and the country along the way. Once there, he is welcomed by Ragnar, a gruff Icelander who has to accompany him to his destination. With his camera on his back, Lucas begins the journey that will prove long and arduous. When the final destination is reached, the journey through the harsh landscape proves to have taken its toll; along the way, Lucas has become a different person.

Director Hlynur PƔlmason, who wrote the screenplay himself, tells in a meditative pace, but with humour, above all a story about the essence of travel: being on the way to a destination. But which one? The Icelandic landscape, in all its rugged beauty, plays a major role in this. PƔlmason filmed it on analogue film in a 4:3 format.
