The Holy Mountain

John Lennon was so impressed by Jodowowsky's cult western El Topo that he and Yoko Ono decided to put money into his new film The Holy Mountain, a surreal and mystical masterpiece that is today considered Jodowowsky's magnum opus. To make sure his cast had the right mindset, he had them perform spiritual Zen, yoga and Sufi exercises for months, while mind-altering drugs like LSD and psilocybin were also used. The result is a quest, as hypnotic as it is controversial, for the meaning of earthly wealth and immortality.

A thief, who closely resembles Jesus, meets the Alchemist, a man who can even turn excrement into gold. Together with his taciturn assistant and seven others, each symbolising a planet, he is taken to Lotus Island, where lies the Holy Mountain, the mountain that unites Heaven and Earth. There, nine immortal Masters will reveal the secret of their immortality. Jodorowsky plays the Alchemist.
