Fatema, la sultane inoubliable

The influence Moroccan sociologist Fatima Mernissi (1940-2015) has had on thinking about women in the Islamic world is significant. The fact that women had been assigned a subordinate position in Moroccan society was a thorn in her side, especially since she could not find any reason in the Quran that would justify this position - after all, women are just as resourceful and creative as men, she had found in her many studies. This position earned her much criticism from conservative-Islamic quarters, but also much international appreciation; for instance, her work was awarded the Erasmus Prize in 2004.

Fatima Mernissi was a woman who lived among her books and friends, according to director Mohamed Abderrahman Tazi. With this loving biopic, he wanted to bring her, her work and her friends back to life. The film's title was inspired by her 1990 book Sultanes oubliées. Mernissi, a woman who will not be forgotten, is played by Meryem Zaïmi.

This screening is co-sponsored by Aknarij Foundation & Emcemo Foundation.
