Bucharest, 1972: at school, 17-year-old Ana meets her boyfriend Sorin, who tells her that he plans to flee the country soon, as Romania has degenerated into a dictatorship under communist leader Ceausescu. Later that night, she goes to a party thrown by her best friend Roxana. There is drinking, laughter and dancing, and they listen to the American radio station Radio Free Europe, a radio station that is closely monitored with suspicion by the Securitate, Romania's secret police, because its message is contrary to communist ideology. The teenagers at the party love the station and decide to send a letter, not knowing they are playing with fire in this way. Then the Securitate invades...
