My Maysoon
On 24 August 2014, 20-year-old Maysoon Karbijha disappeared on the Mediterranean Sea. She was on her way from Syria to Europe when her boat capsized. Of the 712 people on board, 488 were rescued, 24 were pulled out of the water by the Italian navy and the approximately 170 remaining people have been missing since then. Maysoon is one of them.
Filmmaker Batoul Karbijha, Maysoon's sister, wants to know what happened to her and embarks on a search that leads her from Sicily via Tunisia to Libya. Along the way she passes cemeteries full of missing and unnamed migrants, she is confronted with ignorance, indifference and powerlessness. Her search also proves confrontational for her family; the idea that Maysoon may no longer be there still proves unbearable. There has been no mention of her for years. Batoul hopes her search will make Maysoon's fate no longer a taboo - a painful process.
