Luka
Inspired by Dino Buzatti's acclaimed book The Tartar Steppe, director Jessica Woodworth (Khadak, Altiplano) creates a gripping world in menacing black and white with Luka. The film was shot on the beautiful Italian island of Sicily. This combined with Teho Teardo's compelling music makes Luka an audiovisual spectacle.
Luka (Jonas Smulders), a young ambitious soldier, settles in the legendary Fort Kairos where heroic warriors have been waiting in vain for centuries for a mythical enemy to strike and defend the remnants of civilisation. His hopes of serving as an elite sniper prove vain when he is assigned to the maintenance crew and must submit to Kairos' strict code: obedience-durability-sacrifice. As he rises in rank, Luka finds strength and joy in his friendship with Konstantin, an enigmatic radar engineer, and Geronimo, a light-hearted soldier.
