God Only Knows

Fifty-something investigative journalist Thomas is showing signs of strain, having bit off more than he can chew. Shortly before Easter he jumped into a canal in a moment of madness, prompting his sisters — Doris and Hannah — to take his care into their own hands. However, Doris, who is mostly busy with refugees, and Hannah, a successful photographer, disagree on how to best help their brother. Doris wants to look after him day and night, Hannah believes it's time to bring in the professionals. Although they have a close and loving bond, they clash fiercely. Their Christian upbringing, in which they have been taught charity, sacrifice and, above all, guilt, plays a major role.

Director Mijke de Jong (Broos, Tussenstand, Layla M., and more) wrote the screenplay for her new film herself. While all dialogues were written in full, De Jong still offered actors Monic Hendrickx, Elsie de Brauw, and Marcel Musters ample opportunity to improvise in this tragicomedy.
