The Virgin Suicides

It is the 1970s: in a sleepy Detroit suburb lives the strict Catholic Lisbon family - father, mother and five adolescent daughters: Therese, Mary, Bonnie, Lux and Cecilia. Father Ronald leaves the day-to-day upbringing to his wife Sara and she strictly sees to it that the girls behave in a proper way, never seeing anyone outside school. When Cecilia commits suicide, the parents decide to give their four other daughters some more freedom, and certainly Lux, the most rebellious of the bunch, takes that freedom. When she is not home on time after a school party, she and her sisters are punished with house arrest - a punishment with dramatic consequences.

With this impressive psychological drama, a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jeffrey Eugenides, Sofia Coppola made her feature debut, while lead actors Kirsten Dunst and Josh Hartnett definitively established their names with this film. Also starring Kathleen Turner, James Woods and Danny DeVito. The famous soundtrack is by Air.
