Los colonos
Tierra del Fuego, 1901: in the southernmost tip of South America, Chilean big landowner JosĂ© MenĂ©ndez is determined to open up the vast, empty land with a road to the ocean. But the land is not that empty, the indĂgenas live there and they are not cooperating. MenĂ©ndez sends three mercenaries out to demarcate the borders of his land: a former Scottish lieutenant, an American cowboy and a Chilean half-breed guide. The real objective is to clear up resistance to his plans, and once that becomes clear, tensions rise within the little group. Distrust between them is high, as is a willingness to reach for the gun.
In his feature debut, director Felipe Gálvez Haberle highlights Chile's colonial history, a history marked by the disconcerting way in which the original inhabitants were treated. It is a blood-curdling story in every sense, in which the beautiful landscape also plays a leading role. Award-winning at the Cannes Film Festival.
