As Indo-Chinese restaurants are increasingly disappearing, Yan Ting Yuen’s debut film is becoming more and more of a historical artefact. At the beginning of this century, the Dutch-Chinese director made a film portrait of the Ho family who ran a restaurant in the Dutch village of Zeist. Arguably due to her Chinese background, she managed to penetrate behind the serving hatch of one of these countless Chinese restaurants, where just as many Chinese immigrant families earn their daily living.
The film is divided into four parts (the four seasons), which parallel the Cantonese Opera story The Imperial Flower. Accordingly, the couple met at the Cantonese Opera in Hong Kong. During the restaurant's daily routine, the couple recounts their colourful and then-promising artistic past and their still-present but seemingly impossible-to-achieve ambitions.
