Evil Does Not Exist
Takumi and his daughter Hama live in the village of Mizubiki, not far from Tokyo. He collects water for a noodle restaurant and chops wood; in short, they lead a quiet and harmonious existence, just like the other villagers. Then one day, a Tokyo-based company announces its intention to open a glamping, a campsite with glamour, near Takumi's house. Unrest arises among the residents, as the arrival of such a campsite will change everything - done with peace and quiet. The company in question shows itself insensitive to the concerns, the only thing that apparently matters is making a profit.
In 2021, director Hamaguchi Ryûsuke broke through internationally with Drive My Car, which won him an Oscar, among other awards. In this new film, he confronts his characters with complex moral dilemmas, in which everything ultimately revolves around the question: does evil exist? He does so in his characteristic quiet and nuanced way. Award-winning in Venice.
